structure and function of neurones Flashcards
what is a motor neurone
carries action potential from cns to effector
what is a sensory neurone
carries action potential from sensroy receptor to cns
what is a relay neurone
joins sensory neurones to motor neurones
what is a myelinated neurone
a neurone associated with schwann cells which make up a fatty layer called myelin sheath
what is a non myelinated neurone
a neurone still associted with schwann cells, they are just loosely wrapped in one cell
what are the advantages of myelinated neurones
transmit action potential quicker than non
can carry action potentials over long distances
rapid stimuli response
what is an advnatge of a tightly wrapped myelin sheath
prevents ion movement across membranes ensuring movement only across nodes of ranvier, ensuring rapid transmission.
what is the difference in cell body structure between motor and sensory
motor- cell body is in the cns, and long axon carries action potential to effector
sensory neurone- cell body is positioned outside the cns,
short axon carries action potential to cns
