Structure and Function of Muscular System Flashcards
Agonist Def
Prime Mover - Muscle doing the action
Antagonist Def
Relaxed/lengthened muscle for movement.
Fixator Def
A muscle that works with others to stabilise the origin of the prime mover. E.g. Trapezius contracts to stabilise the origin of the biceps
What muscle is the agonist in shoulder abduction?
Deltoid (medial head)
Is the hamstring the agonist/antagonist in knee flexion?
Agonist (it is performing the movement by contracting)
Origin Def
End of the muscle attached to a bone that is stable (e.g the scapula). Point of origin remains still when the contraction/movement occurs
Insertion Def
End of the muscle attached to the bone that actively moves (e.g the biceps insertion is on the radius)
What are the three types of muscle?
Involuntary
Cardiac
Skeletal/Voluntary
What are the main two muscle groups in the back?
Trapezius
Latissimus Dorsi
Straightening of the arm at the elbow requires what muscle to contract?
Triceps
