Q

How do the terms Series and Parallel relate to the Heart

A

Blood passing though the heart is in series, all of the blood in the left will pass through the right.
However most vascular beds are in parallel, except the hypothalamus/pituitary and the gut/liver

4
Q

Why are vascular beds arranged in parallel?

A

To allow equal distribution of Oxygenated Blood

Q

What factor corresponds to the % of cardiac output received by each organ?

A

Oxygen consumption, so the higher the 02 the higher the cardiac output.

7
Q

Why do the Kidneys receive more blood even when they have low Oxygen consumption?

A

They are responsible for Filtration of blood

8
Q

Why does the skin have a rich blood supply?

A

Heat flows there for thermoregulation.

Q

Name two types of artery and give examples

A

Elastic Artery= Aorta= absorbs changes in pressure

Muscular Artery= most other arteries= strong walls, wide lumen

12
Q

Describe Arterioles

A

Resistance vessels, narrow lumen, strong muscular walls which can contract to redirect blood.

Q

Name two other types of vessel

A

Exchange vessels= capillaries

Capacitance Vessels= veins and venules= low resistance can expand to store blood.

16
Q

Describe Active Hyperaemia

A
  • Exercise = high metabolites
  • High metabolites = high O2 demand
  • Need more blood
  • Release ERDF
17
Q

What is the function of Endothelin-derivedrelaxing Factor?

A

Trigger arteriolar dilation

18
Q

Describe Pressure Autoregulation

A

Same mechanism but responds to a change in flow

  • Low flow = higher metabolites
  • ERDF
19
Q

Describe Reactive Hyperaemia

A

Extreme version of Pressure Auto regulation

  • Blood supply is cut off
  • Metabolites build up
  • Dilation, dilation etc
20
Q

Injury RESPONSE?

A
  • Noiceptors detect pain
  • Trigger Mast cells
  • release HISTAMINE
  • Arteriolar Dilation
21
Q

What is the difference between intrinsic an extrinsic?

A
-Intrinsic= selfish needs of local tissues
Extrinsic= systemic
22
Q

Describe extrinsic mechanisms

A
  • Neural- sympathetic and parasympathetic

- Hormonal- Kidneys, RAAS, ADH, BNP/ANP
