The prelude
Structure
1 long stanza - creates impression of unfiltered constant thought. Personal and intimate; Reflects power of nature/internal conflict Wordsworth is experiencing
Contrasts in tone:
1-20 carefree confident rowing
21-31 mountain appears - dark and fearful
32 - 44 afterwards - reflective and troubled
The Prelude - Form
Epic poem in Iambic Pentameter with blank verse
Illusion of freedom
Lack of rhyme = emotional outpouring
IP = rhythm of rowing/power of nature/ rhythm is dramatising a heightened experience
London - form
Ballad with an ABAB rhyme scheme
Memorable protest
ABAB - cycle of oppression between rich and poor/powerful and weak.
Iambic tetrameter - tightly ordered and controlled - da dum da dum = sense of relentless oppression. except for words of suffering e.g. Marks of weakness Marks of Woe.
Repeated, endless suffering; and highly controlled - like the London he is critiqueing.
London - Structure
Uniform stanzas = control
Circular structure - first, second and final stanzas full of suffering of people
e.g. final words:
‘marks of woe’
‘mind forged manacles’
‘marriage hearse.
3rd stanza - causes of suffering ‘ black’ning church’ ‘palace walls’
Suffering is never ending…..
War photographer - form
Four stanzas of six lines, showing the rigid, structured process of developing photos
Quatrains and abbcdd rhyme scheme - seeking order in chaos
Iambic pentameter rhythm of suffering
OR unchanging stanzas and rhythm may represent war photographers inability to change things - work falls on an unreceptive audience .
3rd person - and refers to public as they - sense of distance and aloneness.
War photographer - structure
Caesarea and plosive ‘belfast. Beirut. Phnom penh’ bombed areas forces remembrance. Plosive = gunfire
Chaos and stress to organise.
Contrast between war zones and home (“Rural England.”) – Highlights detachment and privilege.
Final line (“they do not care.”) – Blunt, critical ending showing apathy.
Cyclical structure - start just back from war; ending returning to war; but nothing has changed - no one cares.
