Structure and bonding key words Flashcards
Atom
The smallest particle of an element
Molecule
Two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds
Ion
Charged particle formed by the loss or gain of electrons
Covalent bond
Thee electrostatic attraction between a a shared pair of electrons and the nuclei of atoms involved.
Metallic bonding
Electrostatic attraction between positive metal ions and the sea of delocalised electrons
Ionic bonding
The strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged particles.
Intermolecular attraction
Weak forces of attraction between separate covalent molecules
Electrolyte
Substances that conducts electricity when molten or in a solution and breaks down to give new substances
How are ionic bonds formed?
The transfer of outer electrons from metal atoms to non-metal atoms forming positive ions and negative ions and they are formed between metals and non metals
