Structure and bonding Flashcards
Compound
a substance made when two or more elements are chemically bonded together.
Element
a substance made up of only one type of atom.
Electronic structure
a set of numbers showing the arrangement of electrons in their shells eg 2,8,8, 1.
Covalent bonding
the attraction between two atoms that share one or more pairs of electrons.
Ionic bonding
the force of attraction between a negative and positive ion.
Proton
a tiny positive particle found inside the nucleus of an atom
Nucleus
the very small and dense centre of an atom.
Electron
a tiny particle in an atom with a negative charge .
Ion
a charged particle produced by the loss or gain of electrons.
Giant structure / lattice
a huge 3-D network of atoms or ions.
Giant covalent structures
a huge 3-D network of covalently bonded atoms.
Delocalised electrons
bonding electron that is no longer associated with one particular atom.
