Structure and bonding Flashcards

1
Q

What is the difference between covalent and ionic bonds

A

A covalent bond is between 2 non-metals so they share electrons to gain full outer shells and become compounds

An ionic bond is between a metal and a non-metal. The metal loses an electron to become positively charged and the non-metal gains an electron to become negatively charged.

Q

Metallic bonding characteristics

A

Atoms are the same size
Arranged in regular patterns
When metals pack together the outer electrons delocalise and can move freely which produces a lattice that attracts the positive ions and holds the structure together
