Structure And Bonding Flashcards
What is conserved in chemical reactions?
Mass.
How do elements combine?
Through chemical reactions which bond to form compounds.
What does an atomic structure consist of?
Electrons, protons and neutrons.
What charge does electrons, protons and neutrons?
Electrons = negative Proton = positive Neutron = neutral.
What are the relative masses of electrons, protons and neutrons?
Electrons = practically nothing Proton = heaviest Neutron = middle
What are energy shells and what do they represent?
The layers of electrons and their different energy levels. Closer to the nucleus, the less. Energy they have.
What is ionic bonding?
Where atoms of elements in opposite periodic groups give or lose electrons to complete their outer energy shell.
What type of elements from ionic bonds?
Non metals and metals
What do the atoms form when they ironically bond?
Ions. (Charged atoms)
If an atom becomes a negatively charged ion what has happened to it?
It has gained electrons
What is covalent bonding?
Where atoms of elements share electrons.
What type of elements covalently bond?
Non metals with non metals
Give an example of a covalently bonded compound.
H2o water, methane
How are lattices of metal atoms arranged?
In regular layers.
How are metal atoms bonded?
Through strong forces of attraction between the positive atoms and negative delocalised electrons.
