Structure And Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
How many types of bonding are there?
A
Ionic, metallic and covalent.
2
Q
What is ionic bonding?
A
A stronge electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions (SEABOCI)
3
Q
What happens to the structure in an ionic bonding?
A
- Ions attract and form a 2d sheet
- Continues and builds a giant 3D lattice
4
Q
What does lattice mean?
A
An Infinite repeating arrangement of particles
5
Q
What are the ionic properties?
A
- Melting and boiling is high
• SEABOCI therefore requires a lot of energy to break the bonds - Electrical conductivity
• solid, good insulators no free moving electrons
•liquid good conductors of electricity, free moving electrons allows current to flow
• can also conduct electricity when dissolved in water to form solution (aq)

Q
What are the ionic properties? (Part 2)
A
