Structure Flashcards
Pupil
A hole that allows the light to enter into the eye
Cornea
Bends the light rays to focus them into the eye
Conjunctiva
Keeps the eye moist thanks to lysosome (produced by tear glands)
Aqueous humour
Contains nutrients to nourish the lens
Iris
Formed by a pair of muscles (colored part of the eye) that regulate the amount of light that enters into the eye
Lens
Changes shape for focusing and accommodating
Ciliary muscle
Contracts and relaxes to make the lens focus in a near object.
When it relaxes the suspensory ligaments stretch, but when it contracts the s.l. loosen
Suspensory ligaments
Stretch to make the lens focus a distant object
Vitreous humour
It’s a liquid (like jelly) that keeps the eyeball in shape
Retina
It’s a layer that contains photoreceptors
Photoreceptors
Cones: receptors that are active for colors in bright light
Rods: receptors that are active for black and white during dim light
Fovea
Point in the retina that contains many photoreceptors
Optic nerve
Carries the message to the brain
Choroid
Black layer full of blood vessels. Provides nutrients to the retina and absorbs the extra light that enters into the eye
Sclera
A tough coat that protects the eye (white part)
