Simple sentence
Contains one clause with a subject and verb
E.G: “I sat down”
Compound sentence
Contains two independent clauses that are joined with a conjunction
E.G: “I sat down, for I was tired”
Juxtaposition
Two things place together to highlight the contrast between them
Anaphora
The repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses
E.G: “It was the best of times. It was the worst of times”
Syndetic listing
List that is joined with conjunctions
E.G: “The dog and the cat and the rabbit”
Asyndetic listing
List that isn’t joined with conjunctions
E.G: “The dog, the cat, the rabbit”

Analepsis
Flashback
Circular narrative
Coming back to the same point as the start at the end of the text / paragraph
Cataphoric reference
A word in a text is referring to another word later in the text and you must look forward to understanding it
“‘Even though I called him yesterday, Paul didn’t answer my questions”
