Structural Systems Flashcards
A structural system without a
complete vertical load- carrying space frame. This type of system provide support for all or most gravity loads. Resistance to lateral load is provided by shear walls or braced frames.
Bearing Wall System
A structural system with an essentially complete space frame providing support for gravity loads. Resistance to lateral load is provided by shear walls or braced frames.
Building Frame System
A structural system with an essentially complete space frame providing support for gravity
loads. Wherein the lateral load is primarily resisted by flexural actions of members at the
joints.
Moment-Resisting Frame System
What are the different Types of Moment-Resisting Frame System?
- Ordinary Moment-Resisting Frame System
- Intermediate Moment-Resisting Frame System
- Special Moment-Resisting Frame System
A frame not meeting special detailing requirements for ductile behavior. These provide the
least resistance to lateral motion and so are only recommended for zero/low seismic
regions.
Ordinary Moment-Resisting Frame System (OMRFS)
It is designed to release limited inelastic deformations
in the moment frames that occur due to lateral forces. These frames are designed to provide
moderate to high levels of lateral resistance and are used in areas with moderate to high
seismicity
Intermediate Moment-Resisting Frame System (IMRFS)
Moment resisting frame specially detailed to provide ductile behavior.
Special Moment-Resisting Frame System (SMRFS)
What are the advantages of using Moment-Resisting Frame System?
- High Levels of Stiffness
- Excellent Ductility
- Resistance to Large Lateral Load
What are the disadvantages of using Moment-Resisting Frame System?
- Not suitable for All Building Style
- Cost
- Complexity
Resistance to lateral load is provided by shear walls or braced frames and moment-resisting frames (SMRF, IMRF, MMRWF or Steel OMRF). The moment resisting frames shall be designed to independently resist at least 25% of the design base shear.
Dual System
A structural system built to resist seismic and wind stresses.
Braced Frame
It is a structural component used in buildings with reinforced concrete
frames to withstand lateral pressures like wind.
Shear Wall
What are the advantages of using Dual System?
- Enhanced Performance
- Efficient Load Distribution
- Seismic Resilience
What are the disadvantages of using Dual System?
- Complexity
- Space Constraints
Similar to the dual system but includes intermediate moment-resisting frames between the
primary lateral load-resisting systems (typically shear walls or braced frames).
