Structural steel defects Flashcards
1
Q
What is regent street disease
A
Problem that affects early 20th centenary steel framed buildings
stone, brick and terracotta are porous, which means moisture can permeate the substrate of the building and cause the embeded steel frame to rust.
The rusted steel expands causing the surrounding masonry to blow out.
Has been successfully treated by retaining the facade and replacing the steel work with a custom frame and then tying it in with secondary stainless steel secondary fixings.
Cathodic protection
electrochemical treatment used for controlling corrosion of various structures
Sacrificial metal sacrificed ions as current is attached to steel frame.
