manifest functions: recognized and intended consequences of a structure that lead to the adaptation and adjustment of the larger whole (totality of society)

Latent functions: unrecognized and unintended consequences of a structure that lead to the adaptation and adjustment of the larger whole (totality of society)

Dysfunction: consequences that are negative for the larger whole

1) socialization
-through this process, norms origionally external to us are internalized and guide our actions (behaviour) in ways society says are appropriate
– form a crucial element of “self” (I, me, superego)
norm; we now feel morally compelled to do what we think society expects from us

2) agents of social control
- friends, family, police, militaty, government
- -if people cannot follow norms, others have to make them
