structural functional Flashcards
structural functional theory
- view society as a living organism
- -complex interrelated system of parts
- –a change in one part effects other parts (the “whole”)
-view the world as a “living system”, “totality”, “whole” (a system of part)
stability - “social order”
norms emerge from social interaction - regulate relationship
- norms elaborate themselves into roles and positions
- -“structure” behaviour into ways deemed appropriate by society
structural functional theory: structures produce functions:
manifest functions:
Latent functions:
Dysfunction:
manifest functions: recognized and intended consequences of a structure that lead to the adaptation and adjustment of the larger whole (totality of society)
Latent functions: unrecognized and unintended consequences of a structure that lead to the adaptation and adjustment of the larger whole (totality of society)
Dysfunction: consequences that are negative for the larger whole
2 proceses that function to maintain the system as a whole (structural functionism)
1) socialization
-through this process, norms origionally external to us are internalized and guide our actions (behaviour) in ways society says are appropriate
– form a crucial element of “self” (I, me, superego)
norm; we now feel morally compelled to do what we think society expects from us
2) agents of social control
- friends, family, police, militaty, government
- -if people cannot follow norms, others have to make them
who made the conflict theory
thomas hobbes
thomas hobbes creted what theory
the conflict theory
thomas hobbes: the conflict theory
- says humans are basically self interested, power hungy beings
- -we continually seek after our own self grattification by attempting to obtain for our own best interests, as many scarce goods and interests as we can
-never enough scarce goods to go around (perpetually dissatisfied creatures)
Power; the ability to achieve our will despite resistance
power in authority: both ruler and ruled agree that the exercise of power is jstt
power
the ability to achieve our will despite resistance
Marx response to hobbes conflic throey
marx evaluates on the level of group/society as oppoed to the individual
-scarce interet center on the ownership and control of the means of production in society
2 categorie:
1)owners
2)non owners
—–conflict is no longer random, but it is systematically generated by our position in the resource structure f society
substratum of action
emphais on factos that divide us “integrate”
–is a basic motivation force in history
alienation
feeling of powerlesness and self estrangement — inability to obtainn the outcome we seek
