What is a scotch snap?
A syncopated musical rhythm with a short accented note followed by a longer one. [For example, a semiquaver followed by a dotted quaver]
What does allegro mean?
Lively.
What andante mean in music?
At walking pace
What does Da capo al fine mean?
From the beginning
What is a basso continuo?
A busy / continuous baseline.
Improvised chords with the left hand baseline heard in other instruments.
What is a solo concertino?
A solo instrument against the sound of a string orchestra (with basso continuo)
What is a concerto grosso?
Contrasting small group of solo instruments against the string orchestra, everyone else playing together
What does tutti mean?
Everyone
What is the concertino?
A soloist or a group of solo instruments
What is the ripieno?
The accompaniment / the rest of the orchestra
What is a ritornello?
The recurring theme, usually heard in the ripieno.
What is a passacaglia?
A musical form that is usaully in 3/4 and is set over a variation of ground bass
What is an Aria?
A solo sung in an operatic style, in an operatic or oratorio with accompaniment
What is a recitative
A type of vocal writing where where the music follows the rhythm of speech. Usually just a short section of just vocal or very little accompaniment.

Usually a short story from the bible set to music for soloists and an orchestra.

A part or section for an accompanist that is just as important as the melody

A song for a solo voice, accompanied by a piano. Sung in German
