Chronological order
Events being told in the oder they happened in
Non chronological order
Events being told in different order to how they happened
Sequence or progression of events
The order in which things are narrated or described
Flashback
A section when we suddenly ‘go back in time’ and experience something that has already happened, as if it is in the present
First person
The writer includes themselves in what they are saying
Second person
The writer speaks directly to the reader or to someone else
Past tense
Narrating things that have already happened
Present tense
Narrating things that are happening at the moment
Future tense
Narrating things that are going to happen in the future
Direct speech
Speech written word for word, in speech marks
Juxtaposition
Two opposite or very different things are placed near each other for effect
Paragraph
A section of text that focuses on one main idea
Sentence form
Simple, compound, complex and minor
Time words
Words or phrases that relate to what time it is, or how time is passing
Change in mood
When a different mood or atmosphere is introduced
