What is a Flashback?
Go back in time
What is a Flash Forward?
Go forward in time
What is Foreshadowing?
Clues to something is going to happen in the story
Why is a Zoom in used?
Focus on particular details (maybe to show importance)
Why is a Zoom out used?
Used to talk about the setting
What and why is dialogue used?
When (a) character(s) is/are talking - breaks up the narrative giving us insight
What is a new character?
Introducing a new person and or thing
What is a new setting?
A new place
What is change in Tone?
Change in mood (Think about what may have caused this change 🤔)
Why is a long sentence used?
Add detail or slow down the narrative
Why is a short sentence used?
To build up tension (make an action scene live)
What could a long paragraph portray?
Show importance - by standing out on the page
What could a short paragraph portray?
May show importance - by standing out on the page
What is a shift in focus?
A switch to something else in the narrative (may be used to describe the scene of the narrative)
What is Cyclical structure?
When a story begins and ends in a similar/ same way
Why is a juxtaposition used (in structure terms)?
What is the effect of the contrast, or where the contrast takes place
What is an Extended metaphor?
Like or as for example someone may describe something, with as or like but with a lot of explanation and detail
What is pace?
How slow or fast the narrative is
What is a list?
Is a list id 3 or more things are listed/ said
What is point of view?
POV - does this change with characters and how they explain the same story but in a different way from their own perspective
Why is tone used?
What is the overall tone, is the tone happy, down or exciting?
What is chronological order?
When a story is structured in the correct order like from morning to evening to night time
What is a Climax?
Where the most important part/ thing of the story occurs
