What is a compound sentence?
A sentence that contains 2 independent clauses that are related and join with a conjunction.
What is simple sentence?
Sentence that contains one clause with a subject and verb.
What is a complex sentence?
A sentence containing one or more subordinate clauses.
What is a fragment?
A sentence containing three or less words.
What is the rule of three/ triple ?
Three adjectives or phrases used to describe something.
What is juxtaposition?
It is two words places together to highlight the contrast between them.( normally total opposites)
What is anaphora?
The repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of a series of sentences or phrases. Eg:
I once, died.
I once , jumped off a bridge.
I once , …
The repetition is ‘I once’
What is listing?
A number of connected items written one after another to emphasise a particular quality.
What is ‘ link between paragraphs’?
A recurring idea, character or object in two or more paragraphs to foreground the importance. ( when the writer brings up a image in readers head with paragraphs)
What is shift if focus?
The change of focus in or between paragraphs.
What is zooming in/ out ?
The narrowing or widening of the narrative focus of something in the story/play/ poem.
What is chronological structure?
Arranged in the order of time.
What is flashback/flashforward?
Set earlier or later than the main narrative.
What is ‘ link between the beginning and ending’?
A narrative link between the start and end of a text.
What is exposition?
Introduction of background on characters, events, settings to help hook the reader in.
