Strong Acids And Weak Acids Flashcards
What do acids produce
They ionise in aqueous solutions
Produce hydrogen ions H+
What is a strong acid
Ionise completely in water, all acid particles dissociate to release H+ ions
Eg: sulfuric, hydrochloric, nitric acids
What is a weak acid
Do not fully ionise in solution, only a small proportion of acid particles dissociate to release H+ ions
Eg: ethanoic, citric, carbonic acid
What is the pH of an acid or alkali a measure of
The concentration of H+ ions
How much does the concentration of H+ ions increase by for every decrease of 1 on the pH scale
Increases by a factor of 10
How much does the concentration of H+ ions increase by for every decrease of 2 on the pH scale
Factor of 100
What is the rule for working out how much a H+ ion concentration changes by
Factor H+ ion concentration changes by = 10 power of (-x)
What is acid strength
Tells you what proportion of the acid molecules ionise in water
What is acid concentration
Concentration measures how much acid there is in a certain volume of water
If you have a dilute but strong acid what happens to the pH
pH will decrease with increasing acid concentration
