What is a stroke?
blockage or bleed in the brain caused by thrombus or embolus or due to a haemorrhage
What are the symptoms caused by a stroke?
loss of: power, sensation, speech, vision and/or coordination
What is a haemorrhage stroke?
Haemorrhage or blood leak into the brain tissue, creating pressure and crushes the tissue
What type of stroke can coagulants be given to?
Ischaemic
What is an ischaemic stroke?
Where a clot stops blood supply to an area of the brain
What is the penumbra?
The region of tissue that can potentially be saved if blood supply is restored
What can the penumbra be damaged by?
Hypoperfusion, hyperglyaemia, fever and seizure
What are the non-modifiable risk factors for a stroke?
Age, sex, ethnicity, prior stroke, hereditary
What are the modifiable risk factors for a stroke?
Diabetes Physical inactivity Hypertension Dyslipidaemia Atrial fibrillation Other cardiac conditions Cigarette smoke Sickle cell disease Postmenopausal hormone therapy Diet and nutrition Obesity and body fat distribution
