Stroke Flashcards
1
Q
what is stroke?
A
a blocked or burst blood vessel that stops blood flow to parts of the brain
2
Q
what are the two types of stroke
A
- Ischemic
- clot
a. thrombotic
b. embolic - Hemorrhagic
- burst vessels
- can lead to aneuryms
3
Q
what is an aneursm
A
localized, abnormal weak spot of he blood vesel that causes a bulge
4
Q
what is infarction?
A
result of prolonged ischmeia
5
Q
what is TTC
A
tetrazolium chloride staining
- redox indicator for cellular respiration
- white compound is enzymatically reduced to red in living cells by dehydrogenase
- areas of necrosis remain white
6
Q
what is the process of forming a clot?
A
- Damaged blood vessel
- the damaged vessel triggers clotting factors to come to the area - Platelet plug
- vasoconstriction decreases the amount of blood flow to the area
- platelets form a sticky plug - Clot
- fibrin adheres to the platelets and the RBC to form an insoluble clot
7
Q
what is dangerous about an acute brain ischemia? (3)
A
can lead to
- overproduction of free radicals
- calcium overprodution
- excitotoxicity that triggers apoptosis
8
Q
what is BE FAST
A
Balance Eyes Face Arm Speech Time
9
Q
what are possible treatments? (4)
A
- thmrobolytics
- drugs that inhibit sodium channel to decrease number of AP
- drugs that block glutamate receptors
- drugs that block calcium
