Stroke Flashcards
What is spasticity?
a motor disorder characterised by velocity-dependent increase in tonic stretch reflexes with exaggerated tendon jerks, resulting from hyper-excitability of the stretch reflex, as one component of the upper motoneuron syndrome
How often do moto impairments occur in stroke?
80% of survivors
What are the Motor impairments after stroke?
weakness, spasticity, abnormal motor synergy, disordered motor control
What happens when a stroke that damages motor cortical pathways?
the limbs on the two sides of the body often show large differences in impairment (cross-over of pyramidal tract)
What is something that can occur in recovery of stroke?
roles of non-pyramidal tract descending tracts may increase; shifting balance of limb control from the injured contralateral to the spared ipsilateral hemisphere
Studying voluntary movments in rats with whole frontal or neocortex cortex removed?
Can walk, climb, swim and groom
Studying voluntary movments in monkeys with motor cortex removed?
can reach and pick up food
