Stroke Flashcards
Define a Stroke
The sudden death of brain cells due to a lack of oxygen, caused by a blockage of blood flow (ischemic) or a rupture of an artery (hemorrhagic) to the brain.
How can you recognize stroke signs?
F: Is the face drooping?
A: Can they raise both arms?
S: Is their speech slurred or jumped?
T: Time to call 911 right away!
What is a lacunar stroke?
A lacunar stroke is an ischemic stroke that occurs in a small vessel in the brain.
What do you call a stroke caused by a ruptured aneurysm or an arteriovenous malformation resulting in bleeding in the subarachnoid space?
Subarachnoid hemorrhage
Gloria experienced an onset of stroke symptoms at night and has a history of hypertension. Does she likely have an ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke?
Ischemic
Name 3 functions of each hemisphere of the brain.
Right side: left-hand control, music awareness, imagination, 3-D forms, art awareness, insight.
Left side: right-hand control, spoken language, logical reasoning, scientific skills, mathematical skills
Which brain region is responsible for personality?
Frontal Lobe
What are 3 responsibilities of the parietal lobe?
Processing sensory input, sensory discrimination, body orientation
What are 3 factors that impact the initial medical management of a stroke?
1) Type of stroke
2) Severity of stroke
3) Time post-stroke
The ____ is an area of mild to moderately ischemic tissue lying between normally perfused tissue and the area with infarction. This can remain viable for several hours.
Penumbra - important to restore blood flow to this area
How can a tPA help manage an ischemic stroke?
Breaks up a clot - must be provided within 4.5 hours of onset of stroke symptoms
When does recovery occur after a stroke?
Most notable changes occur in the first 3 months post-stroke, but recovery is a lifelong evolving process!
How does antiplatelet agents (e.g., Aspirin) manage ischemic strokes?
Reduces risk of recurrent ischemic strokes
What are the factors influencing stroke recovery?
Physical - type and severity of stroke, age, health
Emotional - mood, motivation
Social - Support of friends + Family
Therapeutic factors - availability of rehab services, early start to rehab
