Stroke Flashcards
What is affected predominantly in a ACA infarct?
The contralateral lower limb
What is affected predominantly in a Left MCA infarct?
Dysphagia and right sided weakness/numbness
What is affected predominantly in a right MCA infarct?
Left sided weakness/numbness
What is affected predominantly in a brainstem infarct?
May involve diplopia, visual fields defect, facial weakness, contralateral limb weakness, incoordination
What are the 2 causes of stroke?
Haemorrhage or ischaemia
What are the 5 subtypes of ischaemic stroke?
Large artery atherosclerosis Cardioembolism Small vessel occlusion Stroke of other determined etiology Stroke of undetermined etiology
What are some post-stroke problems that impact therapy?
Cardiovascular instability Altered consciousness Cognitive problems Hearing or vision issues Contractures Constipation Respiratory complications Pain Oedema Motor weakness Memory problems Behavioural changes
What causes hypertonia?
CNS damage: Blood flow alterations cause neuronal change and and information is distorted as it travels via the corticospinal pathway
Biochemical: muscles shorten and lengthen depending on the direction of pull
