Why is stress not the same for everyone?
difference in personalities, values, and goals can all lead to different effects of stress on people
What are the stages of stress?
1st Alarm
2nd Resistance
3rd Exhaustion
What is the Alarm stage?
body goes into fight or flight mode, releasing endorphins for energy
What is the Resistance stage?
causes insomnia and increased heart rate leading to hypertension and more health problems
What is the Exhaustion stage?
necessary for the body to heal from fight or flight
5 main symptom of stress
- Headaches - common for tension-type
- High blood pressure - hormones are released causing increased heart rate and blood vessels to narrow
- Depression - severe or prolonged stress can cause a hormone imbalance disrupting brain function causing depression
- Panic attacks - after fight or flight mode, body releases a sudden flood of adrenaline which many cause panic attacks
- Overeating - body releases cortisol which is meant to protect the body, when released for prolonged amount of time, can lead to increased food consumption, stored in adipose tissue
How does stress affect heart disease?
long-term stress causes high levels of cortisol, increasing blood cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure
How does stress affect cancer?
chronic stress can weaken your immune system, leaving you more prone to diseases like cancer,
also speeds up the development of cancerous tumors
How does stress affect COVID-19?
stress weakens your immune system making you prone to infectious diseases,
can also lead to COVID symptoms to remain
How does stress affect Chronic lower respiratory diseases?
trigger of adrenaline, increasing heart rate and expanding air passages of heart to take up more oxygen cause
increase to susceptibility to diseases and disorders such as asthma, hypertension, and upper respiratory diseases as well as lower
How does stress affect Alzheimer’s disease?
elevated stress exacerbates the disease, causing rapid development of pathology and loss in cognitive function
