Adverse Childhood Experiences
-ACEs: sensitize people to stress in later life; these include
–any form of psychological, physical, or sexual abuse
–violence against a parent, particularly the mother
–living with people with substance use disorders, mentally ill, or incarcerated
Early Stress-Response Theories
-Walter Cannon
-Fight-or-flight response
–body prepares for a situation that individuals perceive as threat to survival
–new research indicates that men and women have different responses to stress
GAS
-Hans Selye
-Alarm or acute stress stage (the sympathetic nervous system is affected)
-Resistance or adaptation stage (stress continues)
-Exhaustion (resources and energy is now depleted)
Bad Stress versus Good Stress?
-Distress: negative, draining energy resulting in anxiety, depression, and fatigue; stressors include losses, demands, worries, etc.
-Eustress: Positive, beneficial energy, that motivates and results in hope, joy, and purposeful moments. Causes are any uplifting, fun , or fulfilling events such as birth of a child, vacation, favorite physical activities, etc

-exercise
-reduction or cessation of caffeine intake
-music
-pets
-massage
