Q

Discuss the role of personality in relation to health behavior and healthy environments.

A

The 4 funny Links of how personality and environment can kill you

Link 1: common cause
some things can both cause medical problems and influence your personality. Examples could be a stroke or Downs syndrome

Link 2: Habits affecting health
Your personality is like a predisposition to what habits you will develop and different habits have different health consequences

Link 3: Stress Response
Your habit could also be the result of coping or perhaps just the way you handle stress. blow of steam by going to the gym or maybe falling asleep with a little nightcap

Link 4: Stress response sick role
Some people stress so bad that they don´t function and take on a “Sick role” to cope with the problems and perhaps escape them.

Q

Discuss the concept of “The sick role”.

A

“The sick role” is a set of societal expectations about how a person should behave when ill. Sometimes, people take on the sick role even though there is no organic condition that can account for their activities. A personality link here is that highly neurotic people might retreat to the safety of the sick role when they encounter challenges or stressful situations in their lives.

Q

Explain the “diathesis-stress model”. Give some examples.

A

everyone has a different disposition for disorders and can therefore handle different levels of stress

lets say you need total 10 stress to develop a disorder. your disposition for that disorder is then a static addition to whatever stress you might have. starting with 7 or 3 makes a massive difference in the amount of stress you can handle

this explains how different people with the same amount of stress don’t experience the same thing. or how people with the different amount of stress could still be in the same place
