STRESS Flashcards
What is stress
Imbalance between perceived demand & person’s ability to respond to it
What are factors
Stressor- change in circumstance/situation demands a response
Process of Appraisal- person evaluates demand & resources available to deal with it
Response- physiological, cognitive, emotional, behavioural changes
What is GAS
General Adaptation Syndrome - 3 step process of body response to stress
1) alarm reaction
2) resistance
3)exhaustion
understanding these stages help person more aware of physiological changes and how to respond to them
What is stage 1 about
Alarm reaction:
- distress signal sent to hypothalamus- release hormones
- triggers release of adrenaline and cortisol to boost energy
- this stage help person prep for response to stressor - f/f
- physiological changes occur result of sympathetic branch of ANS
- physiological changes - inc in hr & bp
- inc blood viscosity to promote clotting in case of injury
- pupils enlarge
- rerouting of blood from digestive organs & skin to muscles & brain
- glucose release from liver in readiness of muscular activity
What is in stage 2
Resistance:
- body tries to counteract physiological effects of S1- this is parasympathetic branch of ANS
- parasympathetic branch- reduces amount cortisol released. h.r & b.p return to normal
- if stressful situation ends bodily processes return to normal
- otherwise body stays alert, stress hormones continue to release- can lead to irritability, frustration
what is in stage 3
Exhaustion:
- body depleted on energy resources - trying to recover from S1
- body no longer equipped to deal with stress- person experience- burnout, anx, depression
- physical effects- weaken immune system, stress related illness
Whats transactional model of stress
cognitive appraisal
primary appraisal
secondary appraisal
reappraisal
cognitive appraisal
this is mediator b/w stressor & individual coping response - individual evaluates stressor & resources available to deal with it
primary appraisal
person determines if situation represents threat- based on past experience
secondary appraisal
person decides what’s to be done about perceived threat based on available resources, moderated by past experience, confidence in using problem solving
reappraisal
person decided to continue with strategy/consider alternative
evaluation of model
- ignores social influences conflict w/ individuals coping strategy
- gives lil consideration to stressor nature
- put on individual to cope with stressor people may use group shared strategy
