to make progress in Europe she had to accept the terms of the TOV. Stresemann believed that Weimar Germany had a better chance of being accepted back into the European community which would give her access to desperately needed economic markets.

  • He wrote to his wife Kate that to become Chancellor in such circumstances would be `all but political suicide’
