How do we determine if a patient has strep or mono?

A

Strep: rapid strep test, Palentine petechiae, headache
Treatment: penicillin

Mono: mono spot, splenomegaly
Treatment: supportive

When can a patient with mono go back to playing sports?

A

Do a spleen ultrasound, if ultrasound is back to normal they can play

What if the patient has strep and mono at the same time? What do we do for treatment?

A

AVOID penicillin it will cause a rash.
Give macrolide, cephalosporin, or penicillin VK
