How do we determine if a patient has strep or mono?
Strep: rapid strep test, Palentine petechiae, headache
Treatment: penicillin
Mono: mono spot, splenomegaly
Treatment: supportive
When can a patient with mono go back to playing sports?
Do a spleen ultrasound, if ultrasound is back to normal they can play
What if the patient has strep and mono at the same time? What do we do for treatment?
AVOID penicillin it will cause a rash.
Give macrolide, cephalosporin, or penicillin VK
What disease has a sandpaper rash, terrible looking throat, and results from untreated strep?
Scarlet fever
What disease has a large erythematous tonsil with lots of pus and a deviated uvula and results from untreated strep?
