strengths Flashcards
two strengths of using an MRI in the Holzel study.
- Provides objective data that does not require interpretation by the R
- Provides quantitative data that allowed Rs to analyze and numerically compare pre- and post- grey matter
- Reduces demand characteristics - Ps may choose what they perceive as a “desires” answer on the FFMQ, but cannot change their own brains to reflect grey matter growth
Evaluate the generalisability of the results in Holzel et al.
Strengths: Sample was somewhat representative as it included…
Wide range of ages 25-55
Males and females
Some variety of ethnicity
Weaknesses:
All from Massachusetts
All right-handed (results may not apply to left-handed people, whose brains may work differently)
Describe one way the Rs upheld and violated the protection from harm ethical guideline.
Upheld: Made sure not to accept any Ps with metal implants, which could have caused physical harm in the MRI, or claustrophobia, which could have caused psychological harm
Violated: Ps allocated to the control group had to wait at least 8 weeks before they could receive assistance
