Strengthening - Physical Principles Flashcards
1
Q
Stop/start
A
Newtons 1st law
Increases muscle work required to re-start movement
2
Q
Reduce momentum
A
Newtons 2nd law
Slowing or varying speed, increased muscle work to elicit change
3
Q
Reduced movement
A
Against gravity Auto resisted Free weights Theraband Body weight
4
Q
Increase friction
A
Newtons 3rd law
Increases muscle work to start or sustain movement
5
Q
How can you progress a strengthening exercise?
A
Use different types of muscle contraction eg. concentric and eccentric
Strengthen whole range (mid>inner>outer)
Lengthen the level (bent arm>straight arm)
Add functional activity (specificity)
Vary speed - ballistic eg. jumpy if MRC grade 4+
Increase resistance > heavier weight, progress theraband, body weight etc.
