What could Blanche’s name symbolise?
Her want to be perceived as innocent and virginal (female entrapment); wanting to believe that she fits into the passive Southern Belle archetype (delusion + social class) and perhaps her inability to fit into society’s expectations of women being virginal (victim of hegemonic masculinity - Blanche - (making something pale by extracting colour - not real white) Blanche is not really pure and is trying to hide away from her promiscuous past (death and desire)
What does Elysian Fields symbolise?
Greek Mythology - resting place for immortal heroes but then becomes one for mortal heroes - dominance of masculinity within New Orleans as it represents Stanley’s dominance over his space (the claustrophobic apartment) and female entrapment (Blanche and Stella cannot escape the male dominated space - it psychologically damages Blanche)
