What is the cooperative principle?
When we communicate we assume that the people we are talking to will be conversationally cooperative. This means that we will cooperate to achieve mutual conversational ends.

What is the maxim of quantity?
When someone tries to be as informative as possible. They give as much information and no more
What is the maxim of quality?
When someone tries to be truthful and does not give information that is false or that is not supported by evidence

When someone tries to be relevant and says things that are relevant to the discussion.
What is the maxim of manner?
When someone tries to be as brief as possible avoiding obscurity and ambiguity.
What is the face theory by Goffman?
Everyone is concerned with how others perceive them. So we try to maintain a created identity based on how we want to be seen.

What is positive face?
Positive face is the desire to be liked, appreciated and approved of.
What is negative face?
The desire not to be imposed or intruded upon.

A speech act which threatens someone’s positive of negative face.
