Describe Banksy’s art making process
Some of his artworks have been about war, capitalism, homelessness, etc. He creates stencils of the artwork he wants to create and sprays it somewhere.
Describe Basquiat’s art making process
He uses bold, vibrant brush strokes in his paintings that seem chaotic at first, but are actually all purposeful. He often focuses on racism. He had a few recurring symbols that represented things such as his heroes (a halo).
Describe Hannah Höch’s artmaking process
She appropriated and recombined images and text from mass media to create collages that critiqued popular culture, the German government, and the roles of women. She worked before, during and after WWII
Describe Kurt Schwitters’ artmaking process
He created collages using materials from every day life (Merz). Some of these included labels, bus tickets, fabric, and bits of broken wood. Inspired by collapse of the German government after WWI, tried to show that random pieces of everyday life can create something beautiful.
What influence did Marcel Duchamp’s ‘The Fountain’ have on 21st century art?
- Wanted to challenge the idea of what art was and could be
- Pushed the idea that art was whatever the creator says it was
- Wanted to engage the mind in his art and get the viewer to question what the artwork means, instead of only engage the eyes
- This is why he chose an ordinary, not beautfiul object
- One of the first art pieces that called people to question what it meant
- Inspired “readymades”, artwork that was not made by the artist themsleves, but an object they altered or named
What issues were 3 street artists passionate about and how was this conveyed in their art?
Keith Haring - AIDS epidemic and sexual orientation - included many symbols like the pink triangle, often included ignorance
Basquiat - racism - depicted black experiences like police brutality and murder
Banksy - Politics such as war, capitalism, hypocrisy - uses lots of symbolism and metpahors to represent other ideas and allude to real life occurences
What was the Dada movement?
A revolutionary art movement in the 20th century that challenged the idea of what art could be
Define movement
The path the viewer’s eye takes through the work of art, often to focal areas
What is the difference bewteen pattern and repetition?
Pattern is the repeating of an object or symbol all over the work of art, repetition works with pattern to make the art seem active and creates unity.
Define rhythm
It’s created when one or more elements of deisgn are used repeatedly to create a feeling of organized movement, it creates a mood.
