Lured into false sense of security that it will be a love poem (which it is in a way). Third person. ‘He’ seems infatuated by the butcher’s daughter.

Ominous and threatening image. Sense of danger. Not a typical love poem or stereotype of women.
Dangling a knife on a ring at her belt.
A symbol of purity, peace and innocence.

Disconcerting, grotesque image of droplets of blood on the cobblestones. Quite a contrast of colour from white to red, suggests she is tainted.
dark shining drops on the paving-stones
An air of mystery. The guy is intrigued by her and wants to know more. Also a sense of danger as he stalks her. Does he want to harm her?
One day he followed her
Ominous and mysterious entryway. Adds to the captivation of the whole piece

the stairs were brushed and clean,
Her shoes paired on the bottom step
Then the mystery is back tenfold. Her shoes were drenched in blood which meant she left bloody prints of her heels on the stairs. An eery, ambiguous cliffhanger that left me wanting to know more.
Each tread marked with the red crescent
Her bare heels left, fading to faintest at the top.
