Stratification
grouping people into layers of a social hierarchy

What is open systems of stratification
anyone can work up the social hierarchy, based on equalities of opportunity and meritocracy, it enables social mobility e.g. uk or usa
what are closed systems of stratification
not everyone can work up the social hierarchy, based on inequality of opportunity, restricts meritocracy and social mobility, e.g. caste system or apartheid
what is differentiation
the differences that exist between social groups in strata of society e.g. identities, life chances, inequalities
what are some ways of differentiating people
disability, religion, age, class, gender, ethnicity, sexuality

what is equality of outcome
everybody is treated the same because they all end up with the same outcome
what is equality of opportunity
everybody is given the same chance to do well and get the same outcome
meritocracy
hard work gets rewarded, everyone has the same chance

ability to move up or down social hierarchy through hard work
life chances
the opportunities that you get in life to succeed
status
your position in society, how you are seen dependant on wealth, income, you job etc
power
your ability to get things done
poverty
extremely poor and cannot afford basic needs to survive
prejudice
a pre conceived judgement/idea of someone based on their social class
discrimination
acting upon prejudice
