Strategies to Improve Memory and Metacognition Flashcards
Interactive Imagery
One item will help you remember another item if the items are linked (interactive).
Researchers found that participants who imagined interactive images (a dog riding a bike) performed much better in a test of recall than participants who used non-interactive images (a dog beside a bike)
An interacting mental image is remembered as a whole, and
therefore, it tends to be retrieved as a whole. If you imagine a
cigar sitting on a piano, later you remember the piano comes
with a cigar.
In interactive imagery does bizarre images help?
No, making the images bizarre does not seem to improve recall
Keyword Method
system for remembering things such as definitions or learning foreign language vocabulary. Any two pieces of information can be linked together in your memory using this method. First, you convert the sound of the word or parts of the word into one or more
concepts that can be visualized. Then, associate those concepts with an image representing the actual meaning of the word
Keyword Method example
miasma - a highly unpleasant or unhealthy smell or
vapor.
* “my asthma” - what happens to me when I
encounter environmental allergies.
* So, there I am wandering near a swamp when I am
overcome by a noxious odor and have an asthma
attack
Pegword method
Rhyming Words with the Numbers 1 to 10
* One is a gun, two is a shoe, three is a tree, four is the door, five is a
hive, six is some bricks, seven is heaven, eight is a gate, nine is a
sign, ten is a hen
1-gun Visualize the 1st item being fired from a gun
2-shoe Visualize an association between the 2nd thing and a shoe
3-tree Visualize the 3rd item growing from a tree
etc.
What is an example of what the pegword method can be used for
grocery list, vocabulary, etc
Loci Method
picturing items in familiar locations
Practitioners visualize a large building with several rooms that
they furnish with familiar objects. They then attach the items
or thoughts that they wish to recall to the objects. As they
walk mentally through the building, the objects act as
prompts
Acronyms
abbreviations formed from the initial letters in words or phrases (BEDMAS)
Acrostics
use the initial letter of each word to form a phrase
Let’s say you would like to memorize the order of the planets:
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
➢ “My very educated monkey just served us nachos”
Advance Organizers
a conceptual bridge from old information to new information
Narrative, expository, and skimming - focus more on previewing and
organizing new information before presentation.
* Comparative, analogies, and metaphors
* Graphic organizers
* K-W-L Charts
Comparative Advance Organizers
Analogies and metaphors
KWL Chart
chart with columns for what you know, what you want to know, and what you have learned after the fact. Can be problematic if students write something incorrect in the know column and then never correct it.
