Coping
COPING is a process involving ‘COGNITIVE and BEHAVIOURAL efforts to manage specific INTERNAL and/or
EXTERNAL STRESSORS that are APPRAISED as TAXING or EXCEEDING the resources of a person in a stressful situation.
Coping strategy
a specific method that people use to manage or reduce the stress produced by a stressor.
Context specific effectiveness
Does the coping strategy used match with the environment/situation?
A coping strategy is considered to have context specificness when there is a match between the coping strategy that is used and the stressful situation.
Coping flexibity
The ability to EFFECTIVELY MODIFY or ADJUST ones COPING STRATEGIES according to the demands of different stressful situations
Adaptive personality disorder
High- adjust readily and have a good fit between situation and strategy
Low- use same strategy across many situations and therefore not adaptable.
Exercise
Physical activity that is planned and performed to maintain physical condition.
Counters stress by:
Uses up excess stress hormone, body can return to normal function sooner (after stress)
Increases effectiveness of cardiovascular system and improves stamina for dealing with future stress
Releases mood enhancing hormones
Time out
Social support
Approach coping strategies
Involves efforts to CONFRONT a STRESSOR and deal DIRECTLY with it
Avoidant coping strategies
Involve efforts that EVADE a STRESSOR and deal INDIRECTLY with it and its effects
Tends to be associated with NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES for mental and physical health
Not always bad, can be effective in short term
Both strategies are often used together
