Strategies Flashcards

Reinforcing strategies

1
Q

Problem solving questions - procedural steps to take before working on problems
(9-10 q’s on test, 1.5-2 min each problem)

A

1) Analyze the question - what’s being tested; unpack all info possible
2) Identify Task - what does correct answer represent?
3) Choose Strategy - Solve, Back solve, Pick numbers, Guess
4) Confirm answer

Q

General Math Tips

A
  • don’t reduce fractions on numeric entry problems
  • Choose most efficient strategy or combo strategy before answering
  • Picking numbers (especially on q’s with variables or when q tests a # property that I don’t know)
  • Backsolve with answer B and D first (Always)

Q

QC - How can you deconstruct or simplify these questions

A

Piece by piece. If every one quantity is bigger than corresponding pieces, then the value of that one is bigger.

Q

QC - Why make one value look like another?

A

This strategy makes them easier to compare or can better highlight the difference between the two quantities

Q

QC - Can you do the same thing to both equations? Why?

A

Yes. Just as you can in inequality questions or equations. Can make comparison more simple.

Q

QC - Do I need to solve these?

A

Usually no. Testmakers are looking to see if I can identify mathematical concept behind the question, or the underlying logic. Calculations can take up too much time.

Q

QC - Do Not’s for QC comparisons

A

Don’t:

  • be Tricked by misleading info
  • assume that variables are only positive int.
  • forget to consider other possibilites (fractions, big/small numbers, pos/neg #’s) esp. if answer looks too easy.
  • watch out for look alikes or mislabeled answers on prob solving q”
