Strategic planning
Long term (5-20 years) Scope: all aspects of the organization Viewpoint: external To ensure the organization is doing the right things. Should be based on the vision and mission of the organization.
Operational planning
Short term (1-5 years) Scope: specific to the immediate actions that need to be taken to move the organization forward Viewpoint: internal To ensure the organization is doing things right.
Business planning
Short term (1-5 years) Scope: can be used to start a new business, expand a business, or terminate a business
Resource planning
Midterm (1-10 years)
Scope: specific to the resource or resources defined in the plain
Viewpoint: internal
Can be comprehensive or focus on a specific resource.
Organizational planning
Midterm (1-10 years)
Scope: specific to organizational structure
Viewpoint: internal
Reporting relationships, definition of responsibilities, definition of authorities
Contingency planning
Short to long term (1-20 years)
Scope: specific to the particular situation
Viewpoint: both external and internal
Provides fall back options in case something doesn’t go as planned.
Vision statement
What the organization wants to be at a future point, also used to define the mission of the organization
Mission
Purpose of the company, written to create a sense of purpose

Who should be involved, where the planning will occur, how much time and effort will be allotted?
Process of strategic planning: planning phase
Analyze the situation with a SWOT analysis (where you are right now)
- Vision
- Strategies
- Goals for each strategy
- Objectives required to meet each goal
- Tasks or action plans to complete objectives
Process of strategic planning: post-planning phase
- Communicating the plan
- Implementing the plan
- Monitoring progress once the plan is implemented
