Advanced Fluency
A letter or letters that change a root word’s meaning. prefixes or suffixes
Affix
The ability to recognize, name, and write letters.
Alphabetic Knowledge
The understanding that there is a logical/systematic relationship between the sounds of spoken English and the letters and letter–patterns of written English.
Alphabetic Principle
A writing system in which there is a symbol for each consonant and vowel. The English language uses an alphabetic writing system, but not all languages are represented in that way.
Alphabetic Writing System
An approach to phonics instruction in which students use knowledge of word patterns to decode new words. In an analogy-based phonics approach, to decode the unknown word “zap,” students would think of the word “map.”

Leveled to where the content was taught when considering depth and difficulty.
Appropriate Level
Tools used to evaluate student growth and determine whether educational goals are being met.
Assessment
An educational approach, which builds learning around a student’s strengths and existing knowledge, rather than focusing on what they lack. When using an asset-based approach, teachers need to get to know students well to identify each child’s academic assets and build on those strengths.
Asset / Strength-Based Approach
A label applied to individuals who have great difficulty concentrating on what they are doing AND are extremely active, impulsive, distractible, and excitable.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
A strategy in which a teacher plays an audio recording of a book or show an animated illustration of a book while students read along.
