Root Guard
Prevents a port from becoming a root. This stops downstream switches from becoming a root. Places port into Root-inconsistent state
BPDU Guard
Pairs with portfast. Puts a port into Err-Disable if a BPDU is detected.
BPDU Filter
Blocks only BPDUs. Be careful using
Loop Guard
Prevents ports from becoming designated due to BPDU loss.
Configured on the root port.
UDLD
Unidirectional Link Detection
Has a normal and aggressive mode. Sends info to a device and a copy is sent in reply. detects if one side of a fiber connection is down
802.1D
STP
Original standard. Long convergence time. Listening, learning, forwarding, disabled, blocking, and broken states
802.1W
RSTP
Shorter convergence time. Discard, learning, and forwarding states. Convergence doesn’t have to be 100% done to forward packets
PVST/RPVST
Cisco proprietary. Allows for multiple instances of STP on one device.
802.1s
MST. Allows multiple instances of STP on one device. Maps VLANs to an MST instance.
