Characters:
are the people (or animals, talking teapots, robots, etc… presented as people) appearing in a literary work
The protagonist:
is the main character of a literary work, around whom the main conflict revolves.
the antagonist:
is the character who opposes the protagonist
The way an author creates and develops a character’s personality is known as _________. There are two was an author can do this.
characterization
Direct characterization:
the author can make direct statements describing the character’s personality or appearance
Example: “Roy was a mean, angry man.”
Indirect Characterization:
The author can reveal the character’s personality or appearance through the words and actions of the character, or through he reactions, actions, and words of other characters.
Example: “Roy walked into the park, savagely kicking a puppy out of his way. When he got to the swing, and laughed when the child began to cry.”
