Direct characterization
Tells the audience what the personality of a character is
Indirect characterization
Shows things the reveal the personality of a character.
Foils
A set of characters that stand in contrast to each other
Static character
Stay the same throughout the entire book, do not change
Dynamic characters
Change is important ways as the story progresses
Round characters
Multi-dimensional and true to real life, they have many different sides to their personality
Flat characters
One-dimensional, they have only one side to their personality and often behave as stereo-types
Motivation
The reason a character acts or thinks the way they do
Indirect characterization; 5 different methods
Speech: what does the character say/ how do they speak
Thoughts: what is revealed to the characters private thoughts or feelings
Effect: what is revealed through the characters effect on other people/how do other characters feel or behave in reaction to the characters
Actions: what does the character do, how does the character behave
Looks: what does the character look like/ how does the character dress

Characterization
The process of conveying information about characters (must be characters not objects or animals, unless the animals are characters)
First person
The narrator refers to him/herself as āIā
Second person
The narrator addresses you
Third person objective
The character is NOT a character in the story. The narrator does NOT the thoughts or feelings of the character.
Third person omniscient
the narrator is NOT a character in the story. The narrator is all knowing, can tell what happened, and what various characters are thinking
