Calming of the storm summary
Disciples were on lake galilee with Jesus when there was a storm, Jesus was asleep and they couldn’t wake him, the disciples were scared, Jesus woke up ‘do you care if we drown?’ Jesus spoke of the wind and waves and told the disciples to have more faith in God
Feeding of the 5,000 account
Jesus was talking to a crowd, but the disciples were tired from preaching, so sailed to a quiet place, people followed them, so Jesus took pity and began to teach again, they got hungry, so the disciples were told to feed them, they found 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish, Jesus broke it all into baskets and blessed it, everyone had enough and more leftover to eat
Symbolism of the feeding of the 5,000
- Eucharist is breaking the bread
- god takes a little and gives a lot back
- Jesus is a miracle worker
Jesus’ baptism account
Jesus dunked in lake Jordan by John the Baptist, the heavens opened as he came back up and a voice said ‘you are my beloved son and with you I’m well pleased’ a dove also appeared and the people were shocked
Baptism symbolism
- heavens and voice were God
- dove- peace and the Holy Spirit
- turning point of Jesus’s life
- divine approval/ confirmation of his paternity
- the trinity was present together
Temptations of Jesus account
He went into hrs desert for 40 days and nights, was tempted by satan and lived with the animals, the angels looked after him, he fasted for the whole time
Symbolism of the temptations
- ‘sent/ driven out into the desert’ - like exorcisms
- 40 days may just be a long time- referenced in Noah and Moses
- satan, wild animals/ demons- evil and against God to test Jesus’s faith
- angels showed God’s support of Jesus
- Jesus’s confidence increased
- he did not give in
- authority over evil
- remembered in Lent
Caesara Phillippi account
- Jesus asked Peter who people said he was- John the Baptist, Elijah or a prophet, to peter he was Christ
- Jesus told them to keep it a secret- didn’t want to die early
- Jesus had to suffer and die he said- peter argued so Jesus said it was a temptation from the devil
Symbolism of Caesarea Philippi
- he didn’t want to die before teaching the disciples everything
- didn’t want people to know he was the messiah yet
- didn’t want to look like a blasphemous troublemaker
- Christians today see the suffering always has a purpose from God
Turning point at Caesara Phillipi
- Jesus was only about teaching and healing before it
- first time his death was mentioned- more frequent after it were suffering and death mentioned
- less positive atmosphere from the people towards him after it- people started to think he was trouble
- less teaching of people- disciples were the focus now
Transfiguration account
Jesus took Peter, James and John to a mountain and appeared dazzling white in front of them with Elijah and Moses, peter said he’d put up shelters out of respect for them, a cloud came down and said ‘ this is my son, whom I love, listen to him’ then Jesus was alone again.
