Stores of water - terrestrial Flashcards
Four classes?
- surface water
- groundwater
- soil water
- biological water
Surface water?
free flowing water of rivers as well as the water of ponds and lakes
Rivers?
act as a store and transfer of water through streams and channels
River percentage of water? (small)
0.0002%
Lakes?
collection of fresh water found in hollows on the land surface - majority are freshwater
Wetlands?
areas of marsh, fen, peatland or water with water that is static of flowing where there is a dominance by vegetation
Groundwater?
water that collects underground in the pore spaces of rocks
Depth of groundwater?
4,000 metres
Water table?
depth at which soil pore spaces or fractures and voids in rock become completely saturated with water
Soil water?
which is held together with air in unsaturated upper weathered layers of the Earth
What does it affect (soil water)?
weather/climate/run-off potential/flood control/soil erosion/slope failure
What is soil moisture key in controlling?
the exchange of water and heat energy between the land surface and the atmosphere through evaporation and plant transpiration
Biological water?
water stored in all the biomass
