For long-term storage, how should wines be kept?
At a cool and constant temperature
Why should wines be kept away from strong sunshine and artificial light?
These can cause a wine to lose its expected fruit character
If a wine is sealed with a cork, how should it be stored?
On its side
If a wine is sealed with a screw cap, how should it be stored?
Standing up
What glasses should wine be served in?
Red: Larger than white.
Sparkling Wine: Flutes/tulip-shaped glasses
MUST: bowl of the glass narrows at the rim
What steps should you take when serving a wine?
- Check the appearance: Is it hazy?
- Check there are no bits floating about
- Check the aroma: E.g. no wet cardboard or vinegar smell
What does the vacuum system do?
This relies on a pump to remove the air from inside the bottle to preserve the wine.
What is an inert gas system?
These systems make use of gases such as nitrogen and argon.. They do not react with the wine and therefore are used within the bottle to stop the wine coming into contact with air.
At what temperature should sweet wine such as Sauternes be served?
Well chilled
At what temperature should sparkling wine e.g. Champagne be served?
Well chilled
At what temperature should light, medium-bodied white and rose be served? E.g. Pinot Grigio
