Storage Flashcards
1
Q
Compare secondary storage to primary storage
A
Primary:
- Directly access by CPU
- Content is lost when power switched off
- Volatile
Secondary:
- Non-volatile
- Stores data when not needed immediately
- Slower to access
- Higher capacity
- Cheaper
2
Q
How does magnetic storage work?
A
Magnets have north and south poles, and can be used to represent binary 1s and 0s. Used in hard drives and magnetic tape drives
3
Q
How does optical storage work?
A
Uses differences in light reflected off the surface of a disk to represent bits. Used in CDs and DVDs
4
Q
How does solid-state storage work?
A
Represents bits by little pools of trapped electrons on a microchip
