PROPERTIES: bitter, astringent, neutral

KEY CHARACTERISTICS: binds and inhibits bleeding
ACTIONS & INDICATIONS:
- restrains leakage of blood & stops bleeding:
- vomiting blood, coughing blood, nosebleed, blood in urine, uterine bleeding
- regardless of casue, any type of bleeding
- bleeding due to heat, cold, excess, xu
- kills parasites
- tapewom, vaginitis
Bai Ji
CATEGORY: Primarily Astringent
PROPERTIES: bitter, sweet, cool
CHANNELS: LU, ST, LV
KEY CHARACTERISTICS: restrains to stop bleeding, reduces swelling, generates flesh
ACTIONS & INDICATIONS:
- restrains leakage of blood & stops bleeding
- mainly bleeding from LU & ST - vomit/cough blood
- LU cancer or ST peptic ulcers
- bleeding associated with traumatic injury - local application
- mainly bleeding from LU & ST - vomit/cough blood
- reduces swelling & generates flesh
- applied topically for sores, ulcers
OTHER NOTES:
- becasue it’s cooling you would think bleeding due to heat, but becasue it is astringent, its good for all bleeding regardless of cause

Ou Jie (lotus rhizome)
CATEGORY: Primarily Astringent
PROPERTIES: sweet, astringent, neutral (b/c it survives in water, this may be cool)
KEY CHARACTERISTICS: stops bleeding, removes blood stasis
ACTIONS & INDICATIONS:
- stops bleeding
- bleeding assicaited with heat in LU or ST w/ vomit & hemoptysis
OTHER NOTES:
- can be used fresh; most herbs to stop bleeding are charred or fried deeply; not easy to find fresh b/c it’s seasonl
Xue Yu Tan (charred human hair)
CATEGORY: Primarily Astringent
PROPERTIES: bitter, neutral
KEY CHARACTERISTICS: stops bleeding, fascilitates the water pathways, reduces stasis
ACTIONS & INDICATIONS:
- restrains leakage of blood & stops bleeding
- especially uterine bleeding
- any type of bleeding regardless of location or cause
- promotes urination
- painful urinary dribbling (lin syndrome) or blood in urine
- generates flesh resolves sores
- topically for sores or burns that have ulcerated
Zong Lu Tan (charred palm seed pod)
CATEGORY: Primarily Astringent
PROPERTIES: bitter, astringent, neutral
KEY CHARACTERISTICS: restrains & inhibits bleeding
ACTIONS & INDICATIONS:
- binds & stops bleeding
- coughing/spitting up blood, nosebleed, blood in stool, excessive uterine bleeding
OTHER NOTES:
- charred form most commonly used
Dai Ji
CATEGORY: Primarily Cooling
PROPERTIES: sweet, cool
KEY CHARACTERISTICS: cools the blood, stops bleedinh, reduces swelling
ACTIONS & INDICATIONS:
- cools the blood stops bleeding
- chaotic movement of hot blood - nosebleed, vomit blood, blood in urine/stool, uterine bleeding
- especially effective in alleviating vomit/cough blood
- UTI w/ burning urine/blood
- reduces swelling & generates flesh at sores
- used topically (fresh prefered) - carbuncles, cores, swellings
- benefits GB & reduces jaundice
- yang jaundice due to damp heat
- treats hypertension
- when accompanied by signs of LV heat
Xiao Ji
CATEGORY: Primarily Cooling
PROPERTIES: sweet, cool
KEY CHARACTERISTICS: cools the blood, stops bleeding, promotes urination
ACTIONS & INDICATIONS:
- cools the blood stops bleeding
- UTI with bleeding
- resolves toxicity and reduces abscesses (due to heat toxin)
- internally & topically
- recently used for yang jaundice due to damp heat
Di Yu
CATEGORY: Primarily Cooling
PROPERTIES: bitter, sour, slightly cold
KEY CHARACTERISTICS: cools heat in the blood, stops bleeding, resolves toxicity, restrains & inhibits
ACTIONS & INDICATIONS:
- cools the blood stops bleeding
- especially in lower burner due to damp-heat with blood in stool, bleeding hemmoroids, bloody dysenteric disorder, excessive uterine bleeding
- clears heat & generates flesh
- topically for sores, ulcers, injury, burns
OTHER NOTES:
- 1st choice for hemmoroids bleeding
Huai Hua Mi
CATEGORY: Primarily Cooling
PROPERTIES: sweet, cool
KEY CHARACTERISTICS: cools the blood, clears heat, stops bleeding
ACTIONS & INDICATIONS:
- cools the blood stops bleeding
- damp heat patterns of Large Intestine when bleeding present (blood fresh redw hen it comes out)
- bloody hemmorrhoids & bloody dystenteric disorders
- cools the LV
- red eyes, headache, dizziness dues to LV heat
Ce Bai Ye
CATEGORY: Primarily Cooling
PROPERTIES: bitter, astringent, slightly cold
KEY CHARACTERISTICS: cools heat, inhibits bleeding due to blood heat, stops coughs
ACTIONS & INDICATIONS:
- cools the blood stops bleeding
- various bleeding disorders including vomiting blood, bleeding in gums, blood in stool/urine, bloody dysenteric disorder, uterine bleeding
- stops cough and expels phlegm
- LU heat patterns with phlegm
- promotes healing of burns
- powdered form topically
OTHER NOTES:
- clears heat from the LU and transforms phlegm
Bai Mao Gen
CATEGORY: Primarily Cooling
PROPERTIES: sweet, cold
KEY CHARACTERISTICS: cools the blood, stops bleeding, clears heat in the LU + ST, promotes urination
ACTIONS & INDICATIONS:
- cools the blood stops bleeding
- chaotic movement of hot blood - nosebleed, vomit/cough blood, blood in urine
- particularly for upper body bleeding
- clears heat and promotes urination
- UTI + lin syndrome
- clears heat fromt he ST & LU
- not used for just clearing heat but it if causes bleeding
Pu Huang (pollen typhae)
CATEGORY: Primarily Invigorate Blood
PROPERTIES: sweet, acrid, neutral
KEY CHARACTERISTICS: stops bleeding, removes blood stasis, promotes urination
ACTIONS & INDICATIONS:
- stops bleeding (internal & external)
- traumatic injury - external
- uterine bleeding, comit blood, nosebleed, cough blood, blood in urine, blood in stool, subcutaneous bleeding - intenral
- astringent nature = stop bleeding
- invigorate blood and dispel blood stasis
- painful period & endometriosis
- invigorate even with no bleeding
- promotes urination and stops bleeding
- UTI
OTHER NOTES:
- used charred to enhance stop bleeding fx (tan)

San (Tian) Qi (pseudoginseng root)
CATEGORY: Primarily Invigorate Blood
PROPERTIES: sweet, slightly bitter, warm
KEY CHARACTERISTICS: stops bleeding without causing blood stasis, transforms blodo stasis, reduces swelling & stops pain
ACTIONS & INDICATIONS:
- stops bleeding and transforms blood stasis
- internal & external bleeding
- includes vomit blood, nosebleed, blood in urine or stool
- reduces swelling and alleviates pain
- choice herb for traumatice injries - falls, fracture, contusion, sprains
OTHER NOTES:
- when you cool blood to stop bleeding you may need something to gently move it so there is no stasis
- in China, used as common supplement for blood disorder - nourish women after period

Qian Cao Gen
CATEGORY: Primarily Invigorate Blood
PROPERTIES: bitter, cold
KEY CHARACTERISTICS: cools the blood, stops bleeding, removes blood stasis
ACTIONS & INDICATIONS:
- cools the blood & stops bleeding
- bleeding due to heat
- vomit blood, nosebleed, cough blood, blood in stoll, uterine bleeding
- invigorates the blood and dispels blood stasis
- pain due to stasis - chest/flank
- retained lochia, pain from trauama, joint pain
- sometimes pain with no bleeding
Jiang Xiang (scented rosewood)
CATEGORY: Primarily Invigorate Blood
PROPERTIES: acrid, warm - aromatic (active for moving)
KEY CHARACTERISTICS: disperses stasis, stops bleeding, arrests pain
ACTIONS & INDICATIONS:
- disperses blood stasis and stops bleeding
- often used for internal injuries due to trauma
- fractures, sprains, contusions
- invigorates blood, promotes movement of qi, alleviates pain
- epigastric and abdominal pain due to stagnant qi in ST/SP
- HT disases/chest pain due to stasis
Hua Rui Shi (mineral stone)
CATEGORY: Primarily Invigorate Blood

ACTIONS & INDICATIONS:
- disperses blood stasis & stops bleeding
- topically for bleeding due to trauma
Ai Ye (mugwort leaf)
CATEGORY: Primarily Warming
PROPERTIES: bitter, acrid, warm
KEY CHARACTERISTICS: dispels cold-dampness, stops pain due to cold, stops bleeding, calms fetus during pregnancy
ACTIONS & INDICATIONS:
- warms the womb and stops blooding
- prolonged menstural bleeding and uterine bleeding due to cold from xu
- threateend miscariage = womb too cold
- infertility due to cold
- disperses cold and alleviates pain
- cold abdominal/menstural pain
- eliminates dampness and stops itching
- eccema or vaginits - external wash/douche

Fou Long Gan (dragon liver) | Zao Xin Tu (oven earth)
CATEGORY: Primarily Warming
PROPERTIES: acrid, warm - bitter (charred/ash)
ACTIONS & INDICATIONS:
- warms the blood and stops bleeding
- associated with patterns of cold from xu
- SP yand qi xu
- associated with patterns of cold from xu
- warms the ST and stops vomiting
- vomiting associated with ST cold + morning sickness
